Balsamic Challenge: the Market of Imitation Products in Europe and the USA

Blog e Ricette

In the vast world of the most famous and versatile condiment known as Balsamic Vinegar, there is a very important challenge, that regards flavors, traditions and the various attempts of their imitation. Balsamic Vinegar is a unique culinary delight, deeply rooted in Italian tradition and in particular in that of the province of Modena. The result of slow fermentation and aging, it is appreciated at any latitude both as a DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) and IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) product. The two types differ in some fundamental characteristics, but what is really important is that in both cases we are talking about a product made following the strict rules of the Modena Balsamic Vinegar Production Regulations. In recent years, in fact, there has been a proliferation of vinegars, especially in Europe and overseas, which try to emulate the flavor and refinement of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (IGP and DOP) without obtaining authentication from the Consortium.

These true imitations of Balsamic Vinegar have the most disparate origins and often illicitly exploit the fame of our Black Gold, Italian pride, to market a condiment with a different taste, organoleptic properties and ingredients. A product, to put it in a few words, totally different from what can be called Balsamic Vinegar of Modena and which instead was able to literally make history.

Imitations of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena: can they really compete with the original product?

The main problem with imitations of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is not so much the quality of the product itself, which can be more or less pleasant on the palate and find the right combination with different foods, but rather the actual claim to be similar (if not equal) to the prestigious Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. The authenticity of our condiment, on the other hand, is what makes it unique and special, never intimidated by imitations: a centuries-old tradition of production, the rigorous quality standards and the distinctive characteristics of DOP and IGP products cannot be replicated so easily.

Without going into details of the imitations of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, both due to legal disputes already in progress and to avoid further proliferation, we however remind the reader to pay maximum attention to the label at the time of purchase, especially when found abroad. Here, in fact, it is much easier to find Slovenian, Spanish, Greek and even Chilean vinegars defined as Balsamic Vinegars and far from being a product remotely comparable to Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.

Sufficient to say that the meticulous research on Italian Sounding relating to the year 2022, carried out by The European House – Ambrosetti SPA and Ismea and published in the marketing and retail magazine Mark Up, brings to light very significant data: in fact on the shelves of the United States, Canada, Brazil, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, China, Japan and Australia the average percentage of fake Balsamic Vinegar is 6 out of 10 bottles.
